French regulator raises concerns over new European-first gambling risk algorithm results
The French gambling authority, Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), has developed a new algorithm to assess problem gambling in France. The algorithm identified approximately 600,000 players at high risk of excessive gambling, accounting for 8.7 per cent of France’s online gambling user base. These high-risk individuals contributed to 60 per cent of operators’ gross gaming revenue. The algorithm classifies gamblers into four risk categories. While progress has been made in detecting excessive gambling patterns, the regulator believes further efforts are necessary. The ANJ president stressed the importance of operators continuing to identify at-risk players and implementing measures to address gambling-related harm. The algorithm is part of the ANJ’s strategy to reduce excessive and pathological gambling in France. The regulator has also cautioned operators against aggressive marketing campaigns in the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
US commercial gaming revenue hits all-time high of $78.6bn in 2025
The US commercial gaming sector recorded a record-breaking revenue figure of $78.62 billion in 2025, driven by growth in sports betting and igaming. Direct gaming tax contributions increased by 12.3 per cent to $17.86 billion. Traditional casino gaming remained the dominant revenue source, generating $51.06 billion from slot machines and table games. Land-based casinos in Las Vegas and other key markets retained their leadership positions, with Resorts World New York City topping the list in terms of revenue. Commercial sports betting revenue surged by 22.6 per cent, reaching $16.89 billion, while igaming revenue exceeded $10 billion. Pennsylvania led the nation in igaming revenue, surpassing its land-based casino earnings. Maine was the only state to enact igaming legislation in 2025. Regulators intensified efforts against illegal gambling, with 16 states taking action against prediction market platforms and sweepstakes gaming sites. Illegal gambling operations were estimated to generate $53.9 billion annually, resulting in substantial lost state tax revenue.
Malta gambling regulator launches consultation on AI Gaming Charter
The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has initiated a consultation with igaming licensees regarding the AI Gaming Charter, co-developed with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA). The charter seeks to encourage ethical and responsible deployment of artificial intelligence within the gaming industry, providing voluntary guidelines for integrating AI across customer service, marketing, compliance, and fraud prevention. It complements existing regulatory frameworks such as the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, acknowledging the widespread adoption of AI in areas like customer interactions, targeted marketing, player behavior monitoring, and game development. The MGA underscores the need to mitigate bias and ensure robust oversight of AI systems. The consultation occurs alongside ongoing debates about regulating prediction markets in Malta.
UK Gambling Commission to launch major crackdown on illegal land-based gambling for the first time
The UK Gambling Commission intends to strengthen enforcement against gaming machines and illegal land-based gambling activities, backed by new government funding of £26 million. The regulator will prioritize tackling illegal land-based gambling operations and coordinate with law enforcement agencies. A newly created senior role—Head of Illegal Markets—will oversee investigations and enforcement actions. Operators are required to remove non-compliant gaming machines without delay. Collaboration with the bingo industry has resulted in revised figures showing that 3.3 per cent of adults play bingo, with only 1.2 per cent participating in club settings. Bingo generated £816 million in Gross Gambling Yield, with two-thirds coming from land-based venues. Outgoing Bingo Association CEO Miles Baron received praise, and Nicole Garrett was appointed as his successor. The regulator aims to create a safer, fairer, and crime-free gambling environment through partnerships with compliant operators.
Connecticut lawmakers pass new sports betting regulations and order review of prediction markets
Connecticut legislators have approved new sports betting rules, including stricter integrity standards, restrictions on advertising near college campuses, and a comprehensive study on the impact of prediction markets. House Bill 5229 introduces enhanced requirements for operators and mandates a statewide assessment of prediction markets. Senate Bill 296 strengthens sports betting integrity by imposing penalties for offenses such as match-fixing. The legislative session also included legal disputes surrounding the regulation of prediction markets. Senator Richard Blumenthal criticized the industry for targeting vulnerable bettors and highlighted the detrimental effects of gambling on personal relationships. Lawmakers removed a provision that would have limited withdrawal requests, citing potential operational challenges. The bills await approval from Governor Ned Lamont. The industry continues to face scrutiny over aggressive marketing practices and potential harm to at-risk individuals.
